SNAP Benefit Crisis: How to Help

by | Oct 31, 2025

Over 2 million Pennsylvanian’s will lose access to their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on November 1st. Due to the federal government shutdown, the USDA plans to, for the first time, suspend the program.

SNAP is a cornerstone of food security, and its support is needed now more than ever. Currently, SNAP provides 9 meals for every 1 provided by our entire charitable food network. This resource is vital, especially as food insecurity in Pennsylvania has soared by over 40% in just the last two years, leaving 1.7 million Pennsylvanians struggling for consistent access to food. As key SNAP benefits are eliminated, food banks across the state are already seeing a surge in the number of community members seeking assistance.

With Pennsylvania’s state budget still pending, critical funding through programs like the State Food Purchase Program and the Pennsylvania Agriculture Surplus System are paused, putting even more strain on food banks and pantries.

Food banks, pantries, and other food support systems are facing an imminent crisis. Below are THREE KEY WAYS you can help:

  • Monetary and gift card donations to food banks and pantries provide the most immediate relief, as it ensures they can stay stocked in their most needed items.
  • Research organizations you can donate to in your area who are fighting for food security, like the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network.
  • Food donations and drives are another powerful way to support your neighbors in need. Always check the organization’s website for what can be accepted before collecting or donating.
  • Some organizations also accept fresh produce, a highly valued addition to building a balanced meal.
  • Most organizations have a “Hot List” of most wanted items. You can view the Phoenixville Area Community Services Hot List here.
  • Contact your local officials to let them know you want to see action. There have been proposals for how to fund SNAP during the shutdown, but none have passed a vote.
  • Contact your Federal Senators (Senators McCormick and Fetterman in PA) to urge them to support SNAP during the shutdown.
  • The solutions include the federal government passing a budget or continuing resolution or passing a bill that would continue SNAP benefits during the shutdown.

SNAP is one of the most powerful anti-hunger tools we have. Given our current situation, all three actions outlined above are necessary for us to support our communities.  We urge our friends and neighbors to get involved and support in whatever way they are able.
