Feeding the Future: Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Trellis for Tomorrow

by | Feb 5, 2025

Imagine growing fresh, nutritious food in the heart of a city, no soil required. That’s exactly what hydroponics and aquaponic systems make possible! By replacing soil with nutrient-rich water, hydroponic systems nurture plants right at the root, speeding growth and boosting harvests while surprisingly using far less water.

Aquaponics go a step further even, pairing hydroponic growing together with fish farming to create a self-sustaining, closed-loop ecosystem. The fish waste (aka. poop) becomes plant fertilizer, and the plants filter the water for the fish, eliminating the need for chemical inputs. Together, these methods are transforming what’s possible in modern agriculture, especially where space or soil quality is limited.

In 2023, Trellis for Tomorrow embraced these cutting-edge growing techniques to introduce more options for community members to grow fresh produce in their homes, workplaces, and community centers. By bringing hydroponic and aquaponic systems into urban and indoor spaces, we’ve opened up year-round growing opportunities, ensuring fresh produce is available in all seasons. More importantly, we’ve empowered our partners with hands-on skills that help address food insecurity, no matter the location or climate.

Today, we proudly maintain 17 hydroponic grow towers across 10 partner sites in 2 counties, a testament to the amazing reach of these innovative systems. And we’re not stopping there. Our next leap forward is the development of a hydroponic and aquaponic learning lab at our new Agricultural Learning Center at Lundale Farm. This new hub will showcase different hydroponic techniques and house an aquaponic system featuring 70 Largemouth Bass, illustrating how fish and plants can work in harmony to feed communities sustainably.

By embracing hydroponics and aquaponics, Trellis for Tomorrow is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in food production, one drop of water and one seed at a time. Join us on this exciting journey to grow healthier communities and cultivate a greener future!
